Palestinian leader: Israel should stop settlements

17 July 2009 / AP, ANKARA
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is accusing Israel of not respecting international law and urging it to freeze construction of settlements.

The demand has been a sticking point blocking the resumption of peace talks. Israel insists on continuing some construction to allow for the growth of settler families in an effort to expand Jewish presence on territory the Palestinians claim for part of a future state.

Abbas is in Ankara and spoke during a news conference with Turkish President Abdullah Gül.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana has said the United Nations should unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state to put pressure on Israel if it cannot strike a peace deal. Israeli officials have dismissed the proposal.
