Palestine’s Mahmoud Abbas in Ankara for official visit

17 July 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Ankara on Thursday for a two-day official visit during which he will have talks with senior Turkish officials.

Abbas was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan late on Thursday after Today's Zaman went into print. Today, he is expected to have talks with President Abdullah Gül and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu.

While in Turkey, Abbas will attend an inauguration ceremony for the new Palestinian Embassy in Ankara. Gül is also expected to attend.

Talks will focus on the acceleration of the Middle East peace process, with Ankara reiterating the importance it attaches to maintaining unity among rival Palestinian groups. Abbas informed Ankara of his willingness to visit last month but an earlier meeting could not be arranged because of Gül's busy schedule.
