Four people in the province of Artvin and two people in the province of Ordu in the eastern Black Sea region died on Wednesday in flash floods triggered by torrential rainfall that has swept the region and most of the country since Monday.

The heavy rains that inundated much of Turkey over the past several days have caused flooding and significant damage in many cities in addition to the fatalities in the northeast. In Artvin's Şavşat district, rain caused the Tigrat River to overflow. Two bridges collapsed, and two houses and a business were flooded. Four people died and one was injured in the flooding, while a girl is still missing. Search-and-rescue teams have been searching for Selin Demiral, 6. The district was warned of the danger of further flooding, and houses along the river have been evacuated.

In another flash flood, in Ordu's Perşembe district, two people were killed when their house flooded. One man, 103 years old, was rescued from the house.

The northwestern province of Bolu was also seriously affected by heavy rain that started on Wednesday evening and continued until Thursday morning. The villages of Akçaalan and Dereceören were flooded when a local stream overflowed. Fire brigade teams from the Bolu Municipality and gendarmerie rescue teams evacuated villagers trapped in their houses by the floodwater.

The downpour also hit the province of Kayseri. In Yahyalı district's Aladağlar region, 30 sheep died due to heavy rain and cold. Kayseri Regional State Meteorology Director Ziya Çolak said Kayseri experienced the highest rate of precipitation in the past 30 years in the first half of July.

In the meantime, Environment and Forestry Minister Veysel Eroğlu will travel to Şavşat on Friday. Around 200 places of business and houses were flooded by the rain in the northwestern province of Bartın over the past four days.

Bartın Governor Halil Işık said the only source of consolation for the city was the fact that no residents were killed in the floods. "Traffic flow has been negatively affected between the districts of Amasra and Kuruçaşile due to the overflowing of a river in our province. I call all individuals to take necessary measures against floods," he noted.

Bartın Mayor Cemal Akın has assured residents that municipality workers in the city would do their utmost to help them. "Around 250 of our personnel are on alert to help our citizens who face trouble because of the floods," he said.

Meteorology officials say the heavy rains are expected to continue this week, meaning the danger of flooding will continue, particularly in the northeast.
