Turkey's industrial turnover decreased by 16 percent in May compared to same month in 2008, but increased by 3.7 percent when compared to April, according data from the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat).In industry subsectors, mining sector turnover decreased by 7.7 percent while turnover from the manufacturing sector fell 16.2 percent in May compared to same month last year.
According to the main industrial groupings classification, the highest decrease in May compared to the same month of 2008 was in the energy sector, where turnover decreased by 40.7 percent, followed by the intermediate goods sector with a decrease of 23.8 percent. When the rate of change in the industrial turnover index in May is compared to May 2008, the highest decrease was in the production of petroleum products, which fell by 47 percent, followed by the production of metals, which fell by 46.8 percent, and electronics, which fell by 23.3 percent. The monthly industrial orders index for May also decreased by 19.4 percent compared the same month of the preceding year, while it increased by 3.5 percent when compared to April. According to the main industrial groupings classification, the highest fall in demand compared to the same month of last year was in intermediate goods, which fell by 29.1 percent, followed by capital goods, which fell by 17.1 percent. The highest annual decrease in industrial demand in May was in pharmaceuticals, which fell by 52.6 percent, followed by metals, which fell by 45.6 percent.
