Five soldiers killed in separate accidents in Hakkari, Gümüşhane

One of 12 soldiers wounded when a military vehicle they were traveling in flipped on a slippery road yesterday is transported to a Gümüşhane hospital.

Five soldiers were killed and 12 others wounded in two accidents that took place in the southeastern province of Hakkari and the northern province of Gümüşhane, the Anatolian news agency reported yesterday.

Four of the soldiers were killed when ammunition accidentally exploded in their military vehicle as they traveled through the village of Yüksekova in Hakkari late Monday, a statement released by the Hakkari Governor's Office said yesterday. Two of the soldiers died immediately after the explosion while the other two died after being taken to Hakkari Military Hospital for treatment.

An investigation was launched into the incident, the statement from the governor's office reported. The bodies of the slain soldiers were sent to their hometowns for burial. In the other accident, which took place in Gümüşhane, one soldier was killed and 12 others were wounded when the military vehicle they were traveling in flipped on a slippery road in the early morning hours on Tuesday. A soldier identified as Mehmet Caner Mert died immediately while the wounded soldiers were taken to Gümüşhane State Hospital for treatment.
