Some 15 million elementary, middle and high school students as well as more than 600,000 teachers across Turkey ended the academic year yesterday. The much-anticipated three-month summer break will last from June 12 to Sept. 24, including the holy month of Ramadan and the holiday that follows it.

Nearly 1.5 million students who just completed 11th grade will take the Student Selection Examination (ÖSS) tomorrow, and those who hope to major in a foreign language will take the Foreign Language Examination (YDS) on June 21.

University placements based on the ÖSS and YDS results are scheduled to be announced by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) on July 15-20. Sixth graders will take the Level Determination Examination (SBS) on June 13, and high school placements will be announced in the second week of July.

Not all were able to partake in the happiness that came with the end of the academic year. Forty students received their report cards in Mardin's village of Bilge, where 44 people were killed in an armed attack that took place in early May. Classes were cancelled for one week following the bloody incident. Of the 15 students who were unable to receive their report cards on the last day of school, one had died in the incident and the remainder had to migrate from the village with their families.

Yesterday was the last day of school for around 15 million elementary, middle and high school students as well as more than 600,000 teachers across Turkey.

Some of the students who lost their parents in the incident visited their graves to offer prayers. Village headman Abdurrahman Çelebi said the psychological health of children in the village is improving and noted that children orphaned by the May attack are under the protection of the state. The Darüşşafaka Educational Institutes had requested that all the students be enrolled in its schools, Çelebi said, adding: “We are thinking of sending all of our third grade students to Darüşşafaka. These children are our responsibility.”

Additionally, four students from the village traveled to İstanbul yesterday upon an invitation by painter Canan Berber. They will attend the opening of one of the painter's exhibitions.

More than 1,000 children work in fields instead of studying

Children of seasonal agricultural workers, whose families mostly come from the eastern Anatolian provinces to Çumra in Konya province, spent the last day of the academic year helping their parents in the fields.Stating  that they migrate to Çumra to earn a living as agricultural workers, one of the workers, Ali Demir said: “We are also saddened by the fact that we have to take our children out of school to here. While their friends study at school, our kids work in the fields.”

Çumra District Governor Adem Yazıcı said they are working on a project to increase the quality of life of seasonal agricultural workers in Çumra. Yazıcı further noted that while preschool education can be provided as part of the project, it is hard to provide education for older children.
