Man guns down 6 relatives in Çatalca

21 April 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
A young man used a handgun and hunting rifle to kill his older brother, sister-in-law and four nieces and nephews on Sunday night. The incident took place at around midnight in the village of Halaçlı within İstanbul's Çatalca district.
Necdet Ergün (31), who has been unemployed for some time, met up with his older brother İsmet (44) in the village square. Turning the hunting rifle he held in his hands on his older brother, Ergün said, "You finished me off, and now I'm going to do the same to you," and pulled the trigger, killing his brother. While his brother died at the scene, Ergün ran with the murder weapon to his brother's home, where he, too, had been living for the past four years.

At his brother's house, Ergün then proceeded to kill his 34-year-old sister-in-law İlknur with the same hunting rifle. He then headed for the bedroom where his nieces and nephews were sleeping, this time using an unlicensed handgun he kept strapped to his belt to kill İkhan (11), Nesrin (13) and Hilal (14).

Having killed the three siblings, Ergün began to search for the youngest member of the family, 9-year-old Furkan, who had hidden after hearing the gunshots. After finding Furkan hiding behind a door, Ergün killed him with the same weapon he had used to kill Furkan's siblings.

Gendarmes arrived at the scene after hearing of the incident, and Ergün turned himself over to authorities after returning to the village square with both the hunting rifle and the handgun he had used in the bloody attack on his family.
