A 2-year-old girl named Azra Akkalı kisses the gravestone of her uncle, Pvt. Ergün Bilgiç -- whom she hasn't seen since he was killed in Hakkari's Çukurca district in 1995 during a conflict with the outlawed PKK -- during a ceremony held yesterday by the Antalya Governor's Office at Uncalı Cemetery on the occasion of Martyrs' Day.
On March 18, 1915, the Battle of Gallipoli (also known as the Gallipoli Campaign, the Dardanelles Campaign and Çanakkale Savaşları in Turkish) was won by the defending Turkish armies. The battle laid the groundwork for the Turkish War of Independence and the foundation of the Turkish Republic eight years later.
