Turkey's top court has said it will hear oral statements on July 1 from the chief prosecutor who is demanding that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) be shut down on charges of anti-secular activity.
The Constitutional Court has also decided to hear oral statements from members of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's party just two days later, instead of the usual one month gap in between sessions.
Erdoğan said hours earlier on Tuesday his government preferred a quick ruling in the case against the AK Party, and one day later the party submitted its defense to the court, rejecting accusations that it has been steering Turkey toward Islamic rule. Erdoğan and 70 others face being banned from politics for five years.
