Group of PKK killed in northern Iraq

17 June 2008 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The Turkish General Staff has said a group of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists have been killed in northern Iraq.

A statement posted on the General Staff's Web site on Tuesday said close to 21 members of the outlawed PKK were killed late Monday as the group attempted to infiltrate Turkey from northern Iraq.

The terrorists were targeted some three kilometers from the shared border in Iraq's Zap region, the statement noted.

The military has launched several aerial cross-border attacks on suspected terrorist positions in northern Iraq this year. It also staged a major ground operation against the PKK bases there in February.

The United States, the European Union and many international organizations consider the PKK a terrorist group, and Washington has been sharing intelligence to help Turkey fight the PKK.
