The temperature dropped to -33 degrees Celsius in Kayseri while it decreased to -34 degrees Celsius in the eastern province of Ardahan. According to figures from the State Meteorology Bureau, temperatures fell considerably in eastern and central Anatolian cities over the weekend. In addition to Ardahan and Kayseri, other notably cold cities were Erzurum at -32 degrees Celsius, Erzincan at -19 degrees Celsius, Kars at -31 degrees Celsius, Ağrı at -30 degrees Celsius and Iğdır at -22 degrees Celsius as of Sunday. Snow levels reached six centimeters in the city center of Erzurum, four centimeters in Erzincan, two centimeters in Iğdır, 17 centimeters in Ardahan, 20 centimeters in Kars and 29 centimeters in Ağrı. The Murat River, located in Ağrı, completely froze. Meanwhile, the temperature decreased to -19 degrees Celsius in the central Black Sea province of Amasya yesterday, hitting the lowest temperature in 47 years.Meteorologists note that the cold weather will be in effect throughout the region during the week.
Plumbing and sewage systems frozen
As eastern Turkey surrendered to the gripping cold, water and sewer lines in Ardahan also froze yesterday. Ardahan Deputy Mayor Zafer Yılmaz noted that the cold weather makes daily life difficult, adding that water lines in many houses and businesses were frozen and had sustained damage. Meanwhile, the fuel tanks of several vehicles also froze, and drivers experienced difficulties in starting their cars. In addition, due to heavy snow, more than 40 village roads were closed to transportation in eastern Anatolia with 10 of them in Erzurum, 17 in Iğdır, nine in Muş and six in Tunceli.
