Two mothers die in crash with their infants

3 January 2008 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ESKIŞEHIR
Two mothers and their babies died in a car accident in Eskişehir yesterday evening.
The car, driven by Ramazan Akpınar, 34, collided at high speed with a truck driven by Kerim Çakır at the intersection of Mehmet Özer and Kartopu streets in the Çankaya quarter.

Suzan Akpınar, her one-year-old daughter, Irmak, and Fadime Akpınar’s one-year-old daughter, İrem, died at the scene. Fadime, also 34, was immediately taken to the Eskişehir Osmangazi University Medical School Hospital where she died minutes later. Ramazan Akpınar was seriously wounded and was taken to the same hospital.

Fadime’s husband, Ümit Akpınar, rushed to the scene of the collision and became hysterical upon seeing the items in his daughter’s bag scattered on the road. Policemen at the scene tried to calm him down. The policemen and passersby were deeply moved to see the babies’ pacifiers, toys and blankets strewn about.
