According to information obtained by an Anatolia news agency reporter, Edremit's former provincial governor, Şefik Aydın, didn't have any children from his first wife D.D.G., although they had tried various fertility treatments, which revealed that D.D.G. was unable to conceive. Upon discovery of this fact, Aydın asked permission from his wife and started living with R.A. In the meantime, Aydın had two kids from R.A. and after their birth, divorced his wife of 26 years and married R.A. However, when he was appointed the provincial governor of İzmir's Dikili district, he had to leave his older daughter A.A., 8, with D.D.G., whom she called, "step mother," in order not to take her away from her school and friends.
D.D.G. assumed the unofficial guardianship of A.A. and decided to file a lawsuit to adopt her on the grounds that her financial status is fairly good and that she wants A.A. to be her heir. D.D.G. somehow managed to persuade the girl's real mother, R.A., and finally filed a lawsuit in İzmir's 8th Court of Family Affairs, with an appeal to adopt her former husband's older daughter, after which the court demanded a report on the situation by a group of psychologists.
Governor Aydın, the defendant in the case, told the group of psychologists assigned by the court that his daughter lived with his former wife only for her schooling and that he and his current wife are able to see her on weekends. He also told the group that there were rumors that he had two wives, and that those rumors had caused him great inconvenience in terms of his administrative position. He stated that he had no objections to the idea of his daughter becoming the heir of his former wife, but stressed that he was definitely not willing to give up official guardianship of his daughter.
The biological mother, R.A., also reiterated that they left their daughter in Edremit so she could continue going to the same school and said that her daughter had a good relationship with D.D.G. The psychologists stated in the report they wrote after a series of meetings with the Aydıns and D.D.G., "The adoption of the child by the plaintiff without her permission could create problems in the future."
Aydın spoke to the Anatolia agency reporter, saying, "I got a divorce from my first wife as we couldn't have children, and I had two children with my second wife. This is a private matter and doesn't have anything to do with my administrative position. When I started living with my current wife, I hadn't yet divorced my first wife, but we were separated. She was living with her family in Alaşehir. She underwent various treatments but still couldn't have children, as a result of which we felt obliged to divorce. Is polygamy possible in this age? It is out of the question. We live in a modern country and it is totally averse to our values."
