Theater enthusiasts as well as his family and friends bid farewell to Müşfik kenter, one of Turkish theater's most distinguished actors, at his funeral on Friday.

Kenter died on Wednesday at the age of 80 at a private hospital in İstanbul where he had been receiving treatment since Aug. 7 for pulmonary edema resulting from lung cancer. Kenter's doctor told reporters that his cause of death was respiratory and circulatory failure.

A special ceremony for Kenter was held Friday morning at the Kenter Theater in İstanbul's Şişli district. When his coffin was brought onto the stage, a large crowd of attendees -- including theater artists; sister and actor Yıldız Kenter; his wife, Kadriye Kenter; and other relatives -- applauded him for about 30 minutes. Speaking at the event, his sister said she had learned a lot from her younger brother. “I am grateful to him. Without müşfik, there wouldn't be a Yıldız Kenter. He was my first student and yet my greatest teacher.”

Following the ceremony, the famous stage actor and dubbing master was buried in a funeral at the Kilyos Cemetery following noon prayers at the Teşvikiye Mosque. The funeral was attended by İstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş, Republican People's Party (CHP) İstanbul deputy Gürsel Tekin, actors Rutkay Aziz and Haldun Dormen and many others.

Describing Kenter as a legend, Kenter's old friend Dormen said: “I call him a legend and I mean it most sincerely. As I have said many times before, he is quite a great actor for Turkey. Furthermore, he is quite a great actor for the world. I can safely say this because I have seen almost all the actors in the world. When I saw Müşfik acting in a play that I saw in England, I saw that he was acting even better [than the other actors]. He was indeed a great legend. His death is a loss for the world.”
