Two Turkish parents have been in a Swedish prison for one-and-a-half months after their 14-year-old daughter filed a criminal complaint against them, claiming that they beat her and were attempting to force her into a marriage, the Sabah daily reported on Friday.
Fourteen-year-old Kardelen Durusoy filed the complaint on Aug. 15 and also asked for compensation of 195,000 Swedish krona (about TL 40,000) from her parents. The minor alleges that her parents were attempting to send her to Turkey to be married. The legal age of marriage in Turkey is 18 years of age, while it can be 17 with parental consent or 16 in special circumstances with court approval. Resul and Fatma Durusoy were detained and arrested on Aug. 16. The couple's other two children, a 3-year-old and an 11-year-old, are being looked after by their uncle, Rasim Durusoy, who also lives in Sweden. The parents claimed that Kardelen was drinking alcohol and associating with people who were leading her astray. The girl also allegedly had an affair with a 40-year-old man. Statements made by Durusoy family's two other children contradicted Kardalen's allegations.
