Turkey will retaliate without hesitation if its border with Syria is violated again and if it believes that its national security is in danger, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Saturday.
Turkey has been taking every kind of defense measure along its borders, Davutoğlu said at a meeting with his visiting German counterpart Guido Westerwelle.
The foreign minister also made it clear that NATO stands behind Turkey.
"When it comes to security, Turkey's border is equal to the Norwegian border as far as NATO is concerned. The security of these borders is the security of NATO. So we believe that this solidarity will continue,” Davutoğlu said during the meeting.
Westerwelle said he paid this visit to Turkey to declare support for Turkey over its right to protect its territorial integrity.
Turkey's armed forces have repeatedly responded in kind in past days to shelling spilling across the border from Syria, as fighting between Syrian government forces and opposition fighters intensifies.
On Wednesday, Turkish Chief of Staff Gen. Necdet Özel also vowed to respond “with greater force” if the Syrian shells continued to land on Turkish soil.
