Program removes obstacles preventing access to education

A program launched by the Ministry of Education in 2008 also helps provide students with disabilities with an education.

A program launched by the Education Ministry in 2008 has changed the fates of hundreds of thousands of students by removing obstacles that prevented them from having access to education.

Thanks to the program and efforts of school principals and teachers, hundreds of thousands of students aged between 10 and 14 who were unable to begin school for reasons such as illness, financial problems and migration have begun school.

The Education Ministry launched the program in question for children who had missed the opportunity to receive an education with their peers. The program enables these students to keep up with their peers by providing them with an accelerated education.

A total of 28,559 students began school thanks to the program between 2008 and 2011. While the number of students who never enrolled in school or dropped out of school was 325,000 before this program was launched, this figure has fallen to 55,000.

Two disabled students in Diyarbakır who could not go to school due to their physical condition benefited from the program and started school after they were provided with wheelchairs.

Songül Sevindik, 13, and Gülbahar Turan, 16, enrolled in İstanbul’s Sancaktepe Yenidoğan Primary School thanks to the ministry’s program.

Turan’s family migrated to İstanbul from Siirt but did not send her to school because her father went abroad after he failed to find a job in İstanbul. Gülbahar’s grandmother objected to her going to school because the girl’s father was abroad, and they had financial problems. Seeing that his daughter couldn’t even read or write after he returned from overseas, Gülbahar’s father said he regrets having failed to support Gülbahar’s education.

Songül Sevindik was not sent to school due to health problems but learned to read and write within three weeks thanks to the ministry’s program. Songül’s father Mevlüt said he would do his best for the education of his daughter, while Songül said she is grateful to her family who did not lose hope although she was suffering from health problems.
