The nation’s mail carriers have started to prepare for a national competition scheduled for June that will find the fastest postman in Turkey.
Six people have been chosen to represent İstanbul in the competition, which will take place next month at Gülhane Park in Eminönü. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency on Friday, Musa Kandemir, who is one of the postmen from İstanbul taking part in the competition, said walking competitions to choose the fastest mail carrier are traditional events in Turkey. Forty-seven-year-old Kandemir noted that he loves doing sports and therefore participating in the walking competition is a pleasure for him.

“I have been a mailman for approximately 22 years. I was the fastest postman in the qualification round in İstanbul as I have lots of experience. Furthermore, I have been successful in the past in various competitions throughout Turkey,” Kandemir stated. Kandemir added that he has been walking and running approximately 10 kilometers each day to prepare for the upcoming competition.

In addition, a couple, Nesrin and Ekrem Vural, is also preparing for the competition. Twenty-nine-year-old Nesrin has been a mail carrier for 10 years, and she met her husband, Ekrem, during a previous walking competition for fastest mail carrier. Stating that she has been interested in sports for nearly seven years, Nesrin Vural noted that she chose to be a mail carrier. “I have a child. It is very difficult to do housework and work as a mail carrier; however, I love my job, and so my husband or I want to win the competition,” Vural said, underlining that they have increased the amount of exercise they do to prepare for the race.
