Ankara police have unearthed a Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) assassination team that was plotting to kill top state officials and bureaucrats, including the prime minister and members of the judiciary, Turkish media reported on Wednesday.

In raids conducted by the Ankara police earlier this week of the houses and offices of the suspects, police found documents, including information about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and former Justice Minister Hikmet Sami Türk, in addition to two unlicensed guns and 35 bullets. Seven out of the nine suspects who were arrested by the police were detained by an Ankara court later in the week.

The investigation into the assassination team was launched by the Ankara Specially Authorized Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office after intelligence and anti-terrorism teams from the Ankara Police Department discovered the existence of the assassination team after a year-long investigation.

Police found documents detailing the assassination plots at the house of one of the suspects, E.K., who is the alleged leader of the team in Ankara. The documents found include photos of the residential complexes of state officials in Çankaya and information about the people who enter these complexes with civilian vehicles in addition to photos of Türk's house in the northwestern province of Bolu.

Police found that the DHKP/C administration had ordered two of the suspects to Ankara to join the assassination team. One of the suspects, İ.K., who was captured while in possession of a gun, is a student at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, police said.

In 2009, former Justice Minister Türk escaped unscathed from an assassination attempt at an Ankara university after a woman approached him and detonated a bomb. According to police records, the attacker -- identified as Didem Akman -- had been jailed for eight months for membership in the DHKP/C.
