The Turkish Parliament agreed on Tuesday to launch a commission to investigate and research what effects Internet usage has on children.
Parliament discussed research proposals presented by deputies from the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP). The deputies requested the creation of a parliamentary commission to research Internet usage in Turkey and protect children from harmful material on the Internet.
Representing the ruling AK Party, Health Minister Recep Akdağ stated that society needs to be informed about the risks of Internet addiction. He added that Internet filtering should be reviewed very carefully to prevent children from accessing pornographic material. “What harms children is not only obscenity, but also text and multimedia which includes violence,” Akdağ added.
