A man threw an egg at main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Thursday as the CHP leader addressed a crowd in the district of Kovancılar, in Elazığ province, from an election bus.
The egg did not reach the CHP leader but did hit the election bus. Erdem Balcı (30) was immediately detained by the police and taken to the Kovancılar Police Department. He was released after his interrogation.
According to the Anatolia news agency, the man told the police that he threw the egg at Kılıçdaroğlu because he was “uneasy with the CHP leader's swearing at Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's mother.” In an election rally in Zonguldak last month, Kılıçdaroğlu, making a statement critical of Prime Minister Erdoğan, nearly let slip an expletive against Erdoğan, in an inappropriate reference to his mother.
The CHP leader almost used a swear word but stopped at the last minute, although his utterance of the first few letters was enough to get the message across. He has come under a barrage of criticism for bringing down the level of political discourse.
Kılıçdaroğlu responded to questions by reporters on the protest at the Elazığ Airport late on Thursday. “He threw an egg, I suppose. I did not notice it, but he is free to do so. This is a democracy. I wanted the officials to not use force against him,” he said. Kılıçdaroğlu added that he will not press charges against the attacker.
