The fire department of the province of İstanbul has completed a study of the fires seen in the province over the past two-and-a-half years, yielding a map of which districts suffered most from fires. The map shows that the Büyükçekmece district tops the list, followed by Gaziosmanpata, Ümraniye, Küçükçekmece, Kartal, Pendik, Kadıköy and Maltepe. The least-populated İstanbul district, Adalar -- the Princes’ Islands -- located off İstanbul’s Anatolian coast, has the lowest rank on the list of fires. The districts to witness the fewest fires, following Adalar, were Şile, Beşiktaş, Eminönü, Bakırköy, Şişli, Sarıyer and Güngören.

According the data provided by the fire department İstanbul has seen more than 60,000 fires over the past the last two-and-a-half years -- about 24,000 annually. While 39,106 of these fires were on the European side of the city, the remaining 21,656 occurred on the Anatolian side.

The head of the İstanbul fire department, Ali Karahan, stressed that careless accidents caused most fires, adding that they are organizing educational seminars at schools to raise awareness of the dangers of fires and that they also plan to educate housewives about the issue. Stressing that fires can be prevented through urban transformation projects, Karahan said precautions will be taken against fires in future construction. He added that districts with a better educated population face fewer fires and that the damage in these areas is not as significant as those with less educated populations.
