A hitman in Adana has applied to the Human Rights Association (İHD) for protection after reportedly receiving death threats for failing to kill a target.

The Taraf daily reported on Monday that a hitman named Ö.A. has applied to the İHD's Adana branch for protection against a gang who hired him to shoot a businessman named R.B. Among the members of the gang are police officers, whom Ö.A. names in his application.

Ö.A. said in his application that the gang had hired him to kill businessman R.B. in exchange for TL 500,000. He said he shot R.B. in the head but that he survived the attack. The gang allegedly refused to pay Ö.A. and later threatened his life.

Businessman R.B. has verified the allegations.

In his petition for protection, Ö.A. wrote: “I've worked with and known B.T. for many years. He wanted me to shoot R.B. for TL 500,000. If I went to prison he said, ‘I will get you out as soon as possible.' So B.T., V.T., Ş. Ö., police school Deputy Director M.Ç., Deputy Police Chief M.U., Deputy Police Chief B.T. and I met at B.T.'s office to discuss how to kill R.B.”

“We tried ambushing him three times but to no avail,” Ö.A. added. “Finally police school Deputy Director M.Ç. stopped and searched the car [of R.B.]. He pointed out to me that there was nothing on his head. I fired at R.B. with a gun. We injured him in the head and fled.”

Ö.A. said he regrets what he did and implored the İHD for help.

A case has been opened against three of the 11 people alleged to be involved in the attempted murder. Ö.A. is currently in prison because of another gang feud.

Head of the İHD's Adana branch Osman Kara said he was surprised to receive such an application. “This is the first time we've encountered an application like this. He is talking about a gang extending to the upper echelons of the police. The allegations are very serious; I hope the truth comes to light.”
