The family of a private who was killed after being beaten by his superiors while serving his military term was attacked over the weekend by a group of assailants, Turkish media reported on Monday.

Pvt. Uğur Kantar was killed after enduring physical abuse and torture at a “disco,” military slang for disciplinary prison. He died on Thursday at İstanbul's Gülhane Military Academy of Medicine (GATA), 80 days after he was nearly beaten to death by his superiors. Military prosecutors have launched an investigation into the identity of the alleged torturers and have discovered that Kantar was not their only victim.

As the controversy over the death of Kantar, who was buried over the weekend, still continues, the Vatan and the Taraf dailies reported on Monday that a group of 20 people attacked the Kantar family's home on Saturday night. Vatan reported that a group equipped with knives, stones and sticks attacked the Kantar family in their home in the Emniyet neighborhood of İstanbul.

Kantar's uncle, aunt and 80-year-old grandfather, Salim Güneytaş, tried to stop the group, but the angry crowd reportedly beat them. The soldier's father, Aydın Kantar, who also went outside to see what was happening was also beaten by assailants. Family members who suffered injuries were taken to Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital, where doctors reportedly confirmed their injuries.

The family filed criminal complaints against the assailants. According to Taraf, the family quarreled with police after learning that three of the attackers had in fact detained but were later released by police.
