Professor Mehmet Haberal, a jailed suspect in the Ergenekon case, attended his late mother's funeral in the Black Sea province of Zonguldak on Tuesday thanks to a court decision that granted him two days' leave to be at the funeral.
Haberal is also a Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy for Zonguldak. CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, former CHP leader and current CHP Antalya deputy Deniz Baykal along with other CHP officials also attended the funeral.
Haberal's mother, Medine, passed away Monday morning. Funeral prayers were held at the Acılık Mosque, to which Haberal traveled in an ambulance due to health complaints. He was accompanied by 25 military officers.
Medine Haberal was later laid to rest at a local cemetery.
Haberal was arrested in 2009 on charges of membership in a clandestine terrorist network known as Ergenekon. He was elected as a deputy for the CHP in the June 12, 2011 general elections; however, he was not released from prison by the court, contrary to the CHP's expectations.
