The European Parliament has also expressed concern about the Supreme Court of Appeals decision against the Mor Gabriel Monastery.
Ria Oomen-Ruijten, the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Turkey, told Sunday’s Zaman that she shares the concerns of the European Commission about the court ruling and that in her European Parliament resolutions she has always called on the government of Turkey to ensure that the Mor Gabriel Monastery is not deprived of its lands and that it is protected in its entirety.
Joseph Daul, leader of the center-right European People’s Party, also said the safety and rights of all minorities, including religious groups, must be respected and protected in all societies. “I take note of the decision of the Turkish court. ... I appeal to the Turkish authorities to protect a historical monument and to look after its believers who are Turkish citizens as well,” he stated.
In earlier statements, officials from the European Union also stated that the union was “seriously concerned” about the Mor Gabriel ruling.
