The State Meteorology Bureau has announced that İstanbul will be hit by snowfall on Tuesday that is expected to continue over the next two days.
Following the blanket of snow that covered İstanbul last week, İstanbulites enjoyed a sunny weekend as the weather warmed up. However, expectations that more sunny days were ahead were dashed when the State Meteorology Bureau forecast snow and snow mixed with rain for İstanbul this evening, which is expected to continue through to Wednesday and Thursday.
Ice and frost are also expected to affect the central and eastern parts of Turkey, particularly eastern Anatolia and east central Anatolia. Residents of these regions are advised to be extra cautious when venturing outside and to be aware of the adverse conditions caused by continuing snow. Bureau officials have also warned residents in the western parts of Turkey about flash floods that may occur due to melting snow as temperatures have increased.
Snow last week covered many cities in central and northwestern Turkey. The snowfall caused difficult driving conditions, with some roads closed to traffic flow due to ice. Although the current cold snap in Turkey has caused severe problems across many of the country’s provinces, the arrival of snow in the warmer western parts of the country, such as İzmir, was greeted by locals with excitement as they have not experienced such considerable snowfall for the last five years.
