Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Muharrem İnce said on Monday that while he is not currently a candidate for the party's leadership, he may change his mind in the future and run for the top position in the party.

İnce, who held a news conference at a CHP office in Yalova, was asked whether he plans to run for the CHP leadership as there have been rumors leading up to the 2012 CHP party congress that he may run for the position.

“I am currently group deputy chairman of the CHP. I have never conducted politics based on betrayal. As long as I am the group deputy chairman of this party, I don't have such things in mind, but let's wait and see what time will show,” İnce said.

The CHP has recently entered turbulent times due to the party's stance on the Dersim massacre. Despite calls from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who apologized on behalf of the state for the massacre that took place in the early years of the republic, CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu failed to offer an apology even though the massacre was carried out under the rule of his party in 1937.

Kılıçdaroğlu's stance on Dersim has led to comments that his leadership has actually ended. The CHP leader, who was elected to the party's leadership in 2010 after long-standing CHP leader Deniz Baykal lost his seat in the wake of a video scandal, failed to increase the CHP's vote significantly in the 2011 general elections, leading to calls for his resignation as head of the party.

The CHP will hold a party congress in fall 2012.
