The Republican People's party (CHP) has submitted a petition to an İstanbul court for the annulment of the recent increase in natural gas and fuel prices.

CHP Deputy Chairman Gürsel tekin presented the petition to a regional administrative court on Friday, where he was welcomed by a group of roughly 40 CHP members. He told reporters that since the CHP, as the main opposition party, does not have the power to affect decisions made by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government, it is appealing to the judiciary against the government's recent energy hikes.

While noting that natural gas prices increased by a total of 45 percent in the last six months, Tekin said the CHP does not understand the reasons behind the rise. “The energy minister cites the Arab Spring. If we accept the minister's statement, then why would Turkey be affected by that, while Greece and Bulgaria remain unaffected?” Tekin asked, adding that the explanations provided by the government have failed to convince the people regarding the necessity of the increase. Tekin argued that remarks by government officials on Thursday portend a further increase in energy prices.

The price of gasoline increased by 2 percent this month, while natural gas prices rose by 18.72 percent and electricity prices by 9.26 percent.
