Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate and the Chinese Islam Association have reached an agreement for China’s current and future imams to study in Turkey.
With the agreement, students from China, where 23 million Muslims live, will return to their native land after studying in Turkey. According to the agreement between the two institutions, Chinese imams will also receive in-service training in Turkey.
Religious Affairs Directorate President Mehmet Görmez and a Chinese delegation led by association chairman Hilalunddin Chen Guangyan gathered in Ankara on Thursday. Speaking at a press conference following the meetings, Görmez said the Chinese delegation told the Turkish officials that they can send students every year to study in Turkish theological high schools and university departments. Guangyan said a new page has been opened regarding future cooperation between the two institutions.
The meetings were marked as the first ones between Turkish and Chinese Islamic authorities.
