A Mersin woman who divorced her husband 13 years ago has taken up the cause of supporting him through his battle with throat cancer, when all others have abandoned him.
Zeynep Yavuz could not bear the suffering of her ex-husband Yaşar Ok when his cancer caused those close to him to turn their backs on him and continued to spread, she decided to support him through this difficult process.
Yavuz and Ok divorced in 1999, following the psychological strain that the illness and subsequent death of their five-year-old daughter had on their relationship.
She sought professional help and the extreme loneliness she felt during the time of her daughter’s illness (yes, during the illness, thanks) spurred Yavuz to develop herself in the area of caring for the ill. After just six months, she started her new profession as a care-giver.
Diagnosed with cancer in 2007, Ok had his larynx removed two years later and was operated on in early 2010 to have a brain tumor removed. Providing financial and emotional support to her ex-husband for the past two years, Yavuz has gone as far as moving closer to him, despite all the social pressure that she has endured. Her personal health too, has been affected as she delays her own appointments, fearing that she will neglect Ok.
Describing her actions as the “requirement of humanity,” she says that she helps her ex-husband despite social pressures.
Experiencing difficulty talking, Ok cannot continue without assistance. Holding back tears as he explains the difficulties that he has endured, Ok says that he is in need of state aid.
