Turkish cuisine has a wide range of desserts and sweet delicacies, but the favorite is baklava, according to a poll conducted by bakery franchise Güllüoğlu.
According to the poll, conducted nationwide, 94 percent of Turkey's population regularly consumes baklava. The king of desserts is followed by kadayıf, a dessert made of thinly shredded pastry sheets sweetened with syrup. Sixty-nine percent of the respondents said they regularly eat kadayıf.
Güllüoğlu's poll found that 30 percent of buyers of syrupy desserts look for freshness in the product they choose, while 18 percent look for a brand name or a famous manufacturer. Whether organic products have been used is the most important criterion for 15 percent of the nation. Other factors for purchase decisions include the quality, price, reputation of the manufacturer and cleanliness of the retailer's store.
The poll also found that men eat more baklava than women do.
According to the poll's results, a majority of buyers prefer buying desserts in half-kilo packs. Twenty-three percent said they always bought half-kilo packs of baklava, followed by 11 percent who said they preferred 250 gram packages. Seventy-four percent of the respondents said they most commonly ate syrupy sweets at home, while 11 percent said they usually ate such desserts in other people's homes. Nine percent said they ate their sweets at bakeries and cake shops.
The poll also found that people eat slightly more baklava in winter than in summer. Seventy-four percent of the respondents said they ate syrupy desserts in the evening, while 18 percent said in the afternoon.
