A group of around 200 people angered by the killing of a 5-year-old girl by a 16-year-old boy in the province of Gaziantep attacked the now-jailed suspect's house late on Wednesday, setting it on fire.
Earlier in the day, the angry crowd attempted to lynch V.Y. as he was being taken to court, where he was later arrested. Failing to lynch the suspect, the group, mainly comprising the relatives of 5-year-old Fatma Demir, attacked the suspected murderer's house. They threw stones at it and later made their way inside. The group set the house on fire after looting it. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene after neighbors called to report a fire; they were able to contain the blaze within an hour. Although no one was injured, the house was gutted. Two police officers were posted in front of the building to guard it until the morning against further attacks.
The body of Demir, who her family reported missing on Sunday, was found a few streets down from her house on Tuesday. Her body was sent to the Adana Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) for an autopsy, which established that the girl was raped and then smothered to death. She was buried on Tuesday.
A police search ended in the apprehension of the suspected assailant, V.Y. The suspect was captured on Wednesday and interrogated by the police for two hours. He reportedly confessed in the interrogation to raping and murdering the girl.
