Three people were arrested in the western province of Bursa on Tuesday as a part of an investigation into the smuggling of historical artifacts carried out by police.
After learning that three people were attempting to sell a historical artifact three months ago, the Bursa Police Department's Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crimes Unit began following the suspects. A stone altar was found hidden in a tractor trailer in an operation carried out in the village of Çayyaka in Bursa's İnegöl district on Tuesday.
The stone altar, weighing 250 kilograms and 130 centimeters long, reportedly dates back to the Roman period. The smugglers, who violated the Law on the Protection of Cultural and Natural Property, were released by the court pending trial.
