Research carried out at the request of the Family and Social Policy Ministry has revealed roughly 15,500 people remarried their ex-spouses in 2010.
The ministry asked the Justice Ministry and General Directorate of Population Affairs to conduct the research as part of an effort to develop policies that will stem the rising number of divorces. The research also showed that 88,000 divorced people remarried in 2010. Some 587,000 marriages took place, while 122,000 couples divorced in the same year.
The Family and Social Policy Ministry plans to launch education and guidance programs for couples who file for divorce. Drawing on earlier studies, ministry experts believe a professional consultancy service could lower the number of divorces. Research has shown many couples cite communication problems as the reason for ending their marriage.
