Two people died in a fire that broke out in a refugee camp in yayladağı, a town in Hatay province near the Turkish-Syrian border, where hundreds of Syrian refugees are being housed after fleeing their country, the Anatolia news agency reported on Friday.

Fire trucks quickly arrived on the scene and brought the fire under control. Officials have started an investigation into the cause of the fire.

According to initial reports, two people were killed and eight others were wounded in the fire. Two of the wounded were taken to a hospital for treatment, while the other six were treated at the scene by paramedics. Speaking to NTV news, Yayladağı Mayor Mustafa Kemal Dağıstanlı said the fire started very suddenly and spread over an area of 1,500 square meters. He added that the fire broke out in one part of the camp which was being used as a storage area, and that there were containerized housing units, in which Syrian families were living, next to the storage area.
