Turkish president meets UNESCO director general

Turkish President Abdullah Gül met with United Nations Scientific, Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Director General Koichiro Matsuura in Paris on Thursday.

Gül is currently in Paris as the formal guest of French President Nicolas Sarkozy within the scope of ongoing "Season of Turkey" activities.

Gül will attend the opening session of the Plenary Ministerial Forum of the 35th General Conference of UNESCO as a special guest, and deliver opening remarks.

Delegations, which will be comprised of culture, education, development or science ministers from 193 UNESCO-member states, will attend two separate sessions that will be held within the scope of ministerial forum today. Also, the new director general of UNESCO will be chosen at the 35th General Conference which will end on October 23.


The "Season of Turkey" activities started in France at the beginning of July with a show of the "Fire of Anatolia" dance group and "Mercan Dede" concert.

Turkey will be promoted by over 400 artistic and cultural activities in more than 70 cities in France for nine months.

"The Ottoman Caftans" exhibition at the Louvre Museum and "Istanbul for Centuries" exhibition at the Grand Palais will be the highlights of the season.

Turkish President Gül and French President Sarkozy will inaugurate the exhibition at the Grand Palais.

The Eiffel Tower, the symbol of Paris, will be illuminated by the colors of Turkish flag, red and white, for four days.

Also, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe presented the key of Paris to Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk, director Nuri Bilge Ceylan and photographer Ara Güler.

The "Season of Turkey" aims to contribute to promotion of Turkey's dynamics, creative differences, culture and heritage to the French society.
