The Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology and the Foreign Ministry have introduced a new field in diplomacy called “science diplomacy,” in which Turkey will be assigning “science attachés” to technologically developed countries.

Speaking at a protocol meeting on Wednesday, Science, Industry and Technology Minister Nihat Ergün told the press that Turkey will soon be assigning the diplomats to countries which hold new and advanced technology and that there will also be voluntary technology representatives.

“We first plan to open attaché offices in San Francisco, Tokyo and Berlin. Later, other offices will be opened in such developed places as London, Los Angeles, Beijing, Seoul, Moscow and India,” Ergün stated.

Ergün said it is necessary to give high importance to technology and science if Turkey wants to become one of the top 10 economies in the world by 2023 with $500 billion in exports, a goal set by the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“We do not want to be a leading country by military or imperial means. In fact, what we want is to be a ‘soft power' in the world, which means we want to have power through diplomacy and scientific and technological development,” he added.
