Is this the kind of answer the leader of Turkey’s most deep-rooted party should give? Instead of speaking on the content of the plan and adopting a democratic stance against the hair-raising document, Baykal is putting pressure on those who are pursuing the indictment, in essence pressing those who committed a criminal activity. This absurd attitude does not suit the CHP, which promotes itself as a left party and a party that has suffered a lot from coups in the past. It especially does not suit experienced leader Baykal, who has spent most of his years in the political arena.
When you approach the events like Baykal you declare that those who exposed the plan are criminals instead of those who prepared it. In other words, you say it wasn’t the junta that caused bombs, weapons and documents to be seized but state workers that are leading an inquiry into information and documents obtained during a legal investigation. This is preposterous. The next step after this is basically saying: “Leave them alone. Let them stage a coup, let them kill, let them bomb…”
What was the Cage Action Plan? A bomb would be activated at the Rahmi M. Koç Museum while a large number of students were visiting; non-Muslim citizens would be killed. Can a political party leader approve of such a petrifying dark plan? As it is known, the plan was seized during a police raid on the office of Ergenekon suspect retired Maj. Levent Bektaş. What were the authorities supposed to do? Not put the document in their records just so Baykal wouldn’t get tired? An honest person from the CHP needs to come forward, explain the meaning of the scientific report issued by forensics a couple of days ago and explain why they still defend the Ergenekon organization. Forensics determined that the plan was authentic and that the signature belongs to Lt. Col. Ercan Kireçtepe. Could there be stronger proof than this?
The plan to finish off the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and the Fethullah Gülen movement also contained frightening conspiracies like the Cage plan. That plan was also prepared by a retired military officer. He first denied it, but the police conducted a raid and charged him. Fortunately, law enforcement had control over the situation from the very beginning. Video footage of the police search starting from the moment they stepped foot inside his home under the supervision of the suspect’s lawyers revealed that the suspect had tried to vilify the police. It was then claimed that the document was a “photocopy.” In fact, by referring to the document as a “piece of paper” as a result of wrong advice, the chief of general staff not only put himself in a corner but also made a statement that had the potential of being considered a factor tampering with an ongoing case. So what happened? The original copy of the document was mailed to the prosecutors by an informant. A forensics report confirmed that the signature on the original copy belonged to Col. Dursun Çiçek. Instantly, military officials that debriefed accredited newspapers every Friday on behalf of the General Staff fell into a big hole. The reason for that was because they were brash and bluffing during those meetings. But the document turned out to be real and the signature a product of Çiçek’s hand. In the wake of the development, Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ needed to explain and reveal those who misled him. But he didn’t (couldn’t). Questions multiplied and every document-related explanation put more pressure on the General Staff. The step needed to be taken was clear: The juntas nested inside the army had to be removed. They had to be removed so love and respect toward our army could continue.
If we turn back to Baykal’s exhaustion, we see that Turkey is truly tired, but not because of the reason mentioned by Baykal. It is tired not because of the indictments but because of the gangs, juntas and the junta’s extensions in politics, the judiciary and the media. Confusion is increasing as the truth comes out, and their ill tempers are reaching unbearable dimensions. But no matter what they do, it is useless. No individual that loves his country and believes in democracy will stop pursuing those that are desperate and furious enough to set traps against citizens and make plans to kill them. Those who try to distort the situation will also be ashamed in the future.
