As has been the case with the discovery of the other military plots, the plan, named the Cage Operation Action Plan, triggered no self-criticism in the General Staff about the junta formation within its body, which is engaged in making horrific plans to incite chaos in the country.
Focusing on the General Staff’s reaction in the wake of the plan’s discovery, Zaman’s Mehmet Yılmaz complains that the General Staff opts to blame those revealing the documents instead of blaming those who prepared them. Examining the General Staff’s attitude, he says they are damaging the prestige of the institution as well as preventing the normal operation of other state institutions by acting this way. “If the military shares its mission of defending the nation with other state institutions and discovers threats against the country and copes with them together with other state institutions, many abnormalities in Turkey will be eliminated in time,” suggests Yılmaz. Likening Turkey to a patient suffering from high blood pressure, Yılmaz mentions that Turkey needs to regulate this immediately as it does not have any power to bear this burden. He says if civilians cannot take the first step toward control, members of the military should take the initiative and begin the work by clearing out the junta from within the military. “If the military demonstrates such a will, other state institutions and society will give it every kind of support,” suggests Yılmaz.
“When the Cage operation plan was first revealed by the media, the General Staff made a statement. Two days ago, it released another statement and accused the media again. There is an abundance of junta members in the General Staff, but interestingly enough, the General Staff does not refer to these individuals even as ‘suspects’ in its statements. But the media which follow the course of the case in an open and honest way are always under attack,” complains Sabah’s Nazlı Ilıcak about the attitude of the General Staff toward members of the junta within it.
