Because the ID number document is also called the tax ID number, the name of the document makes it sound as if all this is about tax issues, but it is not. This number is an ID number which can also be used as a tax number. You will need this number for almost everything, and it is not necessary for you to have a business in Turkey. In other words, this number is your identity in Turkey.
It is very easy to get the number, which for foreigners usually starts with the number “9.” Obtaining this ID number will make everything easy in all aspects of living in Turkey.
Residence permit requirement
Foreigners can enjoy their stay in Turkey during a three-month tourist visa period. An extension to the three-month tourist visa may be granted for three months only. Foreigners wishing to stay longer in Turkey should obtain a residence permit. In order to apply for a work permit, applicants should have a residence permit valid for at least six months. Applicants need to apply through the police headquarters' department of foreigners located in the jurisdiction you would like to reside in.
Work permit requirements
Law No: 4817 Article 4 reveals that all foreigners are required to have a work permit unless otherwise stated by a bilateral agreement or regulation. An application for a work permit can be made through the Ministry of Labor and Social Security if the applicant already holds a residence permit for Turkey. In the event the applicant does not have a residence permit for Turkey, the application should be made through the Turkish consulate where the applicant resides. This does not necessarily mean that the latter way takes longer since communication takes place over e-mail. You can find the list of documents required on the ministry's Web site.
Rent matters
You will probably rent an abode in Turkey. When making your payment, make sure you pay your rent properly and keep a record of payments. Do not pay your rent unless the landlord gives you a bank account number. The best way to get a receipt is to make all such payments via bank transfer. If the receiving party does not agree to receiving the money via bank transfer, get a written receipt stating a) the amount of payment; b) the date of payment; c) the reason for payment; d) the full and correct name of the receiving party; e) the full and correct name of the paying party; and f) the signature of the receiving party.
Don't forget that rent of TL 500 or more must be paid to a bank account, and that this is mandatory.
