But she has still been unable to obtain a satisfactory result. Like all other mysterious murders in Turkey, this one, too, it seems, is not easy to illuminate. However, we should hail the determination of the family of Türkler and in particular his daughter Nilgün Soydan Türkler. She is still resolved to pursue her father's murderers despite all the obstacles.Among the relatives of the people who were murdered by unknown assailants, there is also Hale Özgül Kıyıcı, who is as resolute as Türkler in pursuing the murderer of her brother, who was killed 40 years ago. Their quest helps these murders to be remembered in the public conscience.
By continually reminding the general public of a murder that was a milestone in the road that eventually led to the military coup, Nilgün Soydan Türkler is actually fighting hard for democracy. Many people whose relatives had been lost to such inexplicable murders have already abandoned their efforts. Or they do not want to disrupt a myth built upon lies. For instance, the relatives of Uğur Mumcu do not have the slightest intention of bringing this murder back to the agenda. Perhaps they think that they cannot face the naked truth behind the cover up of Mumcu's murder or they find it unnecessary as these efforts may spoil the myth that his murder has created. But in the collective conscience, the Uğur Mumcu murder is regarded as an unilluminated murder committed in the misty corridors of an unknown past.
This applies also to the murder of Çetin Emeç. I wonder that there aren't any of Emeç's relatives who will pursue the culprits, try to clarify the murder and who will be partially relieved when s/he sees the murderers punished.
After the last meeting of the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK), we had a better chance of understanding how these shadowy operations and murders are covered up through judicial operations. We clearly see how the prosecutors who deal with deep state structures such as Ergenekon and the Kurdish Democratic Confederation (KCK) are lynched. For many years, these mysterious murders had caused tremors throughout Turkey, but we remember none who was sentenced in connection with these murders.
Since these murders particularly depresses the relatives of the people murdered, the attitude of these relatives is very important. If the relatives of the murdered people do not abandon their quest for finding the perpetrators, these murders become public more frequently. Rıdvan Özden, who, it was claimed had been killed by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), was recently found to have been murdered by some other people thanks to a statement by his wife Tomris Özden. The case dossier has been re-opened.
I congratulate Nilgün Soydan Türkler for her unrelenting quest thanks to which a major murder in the run up to the military coup of Sept. 12 will not be forgotten in the minds of the general public. No greater punishment could be issued to the murderers. I hereby call on the people whose brothers, husbands or sons were murdered by unknown assailants to never stop pursuing the murderers and tell the truth to the general public even if this may hurt you.
