Weapons of an alarming amount and quality

We are going through extraordinary times. Even the best students in Turkey can't help but say, “Wow.” A chain of events, each more important than the other and seemingly independent, actually connect at a certain point.

We are, perhaps, using our last chance for our delayed fight for democracy, which has been forced out of our minds. Pro-democracy forces are waging a battle for their very existence. The same applies to the owners and pawns of the military tutelage regime. They are fighting with all their might in order not to give back the power they stole from the national will, which is about to fly out of their hands. I would like to skip for the moment the recent events at the Supreme Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) and take a look at the other headlines in recent days.

The third indictment on the Ergenekon armed terrorist organization has been submitted to a court. Strong evidence made its way into the indictment, proving the definition of Ergenekon as an “armed” organization. According to the third indictment, different types of weapons and munitions -- including 424 hand grenades, land mines, booby traps, 12 rocket launchers, approximately three kilograms of explosives, 43 ready-to-use light anti-tank weapons, seven shells for light anti-tank weapons, 34 anti-aircraft missiles, 35 mortar shells, dynamite, rifles, handguns and tens of thousands of bullets -- were found during the investigation.

The prosecutor's description of the weaponry sounds chilling to a normal citizen. But abnormal citizens are still trying to dilute and dissolve the investigation. The number and quality of weapons illustrate that Ergenekon is not a club for intellectuals or retired people or a legitimate opposition structure.

In a country where people such as Metin Kaplan have been sentenced to life in prison for parading around with mock wooden weapons, I leave it up to the public's infallible conscience to judge those who still undermine the quantity of weapons discovered in this case. The choice of weapons for assassination plans and terror activities is also striking.

Another important development is the start of hearings on the second Ergenekon indictment. An important detail that must not be overlooked was Constitutional Court Deputy Vice President Osman Paksüt's attendance at the court alongside his Ergenekon suspect wife, Ferda Paksüt, who is being charged with providing Ergenekon suspects with detailed information pertaining to the Constitutional Court. The same accusations concern Osman Paksüt; however, the Constitutional Court has decided that prosecution was not possible because key evidence was obtained illegally.

A dissenting member of the court, Serruh Kaleli, called the decision, which took advantage of loopholes in the law, “unjust” and classified Osman Paksüt as a “suspect.”

Farda Paksüt is being accused of leaking information on the closure case against the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), occasionally by handing the phone directly to her husband.
