Second indictment arrives before Obama

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's one-day trip to Turkey ended with a surprise. President Barack Obama will be in Turkey between April 6 and 7. The meaning of this visit and the messages implied by it are of course significant. I want to draw attention to two issues.
Firstly, in this country there are some who are uneasy about Turkey gaining power based on its own values. Believe me, these circles, which seem pro-independence, would be happier if Turkey became a satellite of the US rather than a global actor in its own right. Do not think that this is a scorching statement. Let me try to explain.

Upon Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's historic walkout from a debate at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos after a confrontation with Israeli President Shimon Peres over Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip, these circles acted like a doomsayer chorus. They include politicians, former foreign ministers, diplomats, academicians, columnists and former President Süleyman Demirel. They said Israel was not a country to challenge; this would cost Turkey much in the long run; Turkey's prestige would be shaken and it could no longer be a mediator; Turkish people in the US would not even be able leave their houses out of shame; the US, which is influenced by the Armenian lobby, would punish Turkey; we would see reality when the US Congress passes a resolution to recognize the Armenian genocide claims, etc.

However, some who know the US well and do not think like those influenced by the Armenian lobby -- Cengiz Çandar, in particular -- continuously wrote that "these were not true." It was true that there was some criticism from the US, but it came from Republican neocon circles, which have no aim other than to serve Israel's interests.

Those circles in Turkey have never trusted their country. Believe me; most of them spent their lives propagandizing against Turkey. They said, "Do not be mistaken, Turkey is going down, there is no hope for Turkey." They said: "The Justice and Development Party [AK Party] is deceiving Turkey; be careful they can deceive you, as well. Then you may lose Turkey." During Clinton's recent visit, they explicitly said on TV programs: "It is nice that you are here. But look, secularism in under threat in Turkey, and women are oppressed here. Do not be fooled by what President Abdullah Gül, the prime minister and the foreign minister told you. Listen to us instead."

That beats everything! Have a heart! Now, they are likely to be surprised to hear that Obama is to pay a visit to Turkey and to send messages to the Islamic world from Turkey. They are extremely uneasy about the fact that the US president is to tell the world that as a country in favor of secularism in addition to its Muslim identity, Turkey is in the ascendant, since what these circles said is different from what has happened.

Secondly, why did I say the second indictment arrived before Obama in the headline? There are some who still want the Ergenekon trial to be glossed over in spite of thousands of unsolved murders and documents revealing that terrorist organizations, including the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), have been founded and used by illegal forces within the state. There are some within the judiciary and bureaucracy who resist the trial. The Republican People's Party (CHP) insists on being the advocate of Ergenekon. They threaten the prosecutors and judges.

The second indictment shows that all the efforts of this chorus have been futile. If Turkey is quite valuable for the US and the European Union, if it is indispensable for world peace and the alliance of civilizations, this country can and will no longer be a country that is governed by bureaucratic tutelage or a country where coups are staged.

I mean the eyes of this chorus now look out of the country blankly. US President Obama would never lend support to them, unlike his predecessors, saying, "These are our guys, not foreigners."

Obama's visit is a nasty blow for pro-Ergenekon circles rather than simply bad news.

Come and value your own people. Come, trust your own country. Come, leave imposing secularism and favor democratic secularism. Come and say nothing other than national will matters in democracies.

Your faulty cement, rusty iron bars and outdated mortar have been consumed. Stop the construction! Do you not even understand that from Obama's visit?
