Dear Mr. President

Our nation attaches great importance to your presidency. They think that the forgotten values of the state will be revived through you.
After saturnine representatives with knit eyebrows who strictly maintained their distance from the values that make us a nation, they see or want to see in you the compassion and affection of the state, its smile and “vast bosom” that embraces everyone. Your humility and humbleness excite the nation as they mark the end of a long period of yearning. The nation also holds you tightly to its bosom as a son who it directly sent to Çankaya and who never went astray or popped in on “other stops.” This claim is far different and more meaningful than the numerical support given to you.

Mr. President, there are certain groups who were resentful of your election, who couldn’t digest and accept it. They now feel seriously troubled. They failed to foresee that the nation’s will would have such a great impact. Therefore they are at a loss to come to grips with the point we have arrived at and thus are taking a position against you. Who is actually hurt and subjected to a great act of insolence is not you; the one whose will is undermined is our beloved nation.

Please don’t worry. The greatest support is the one the people give straight from their heart. You are our president who was elected in an election where the rules of democracy prevailed. People elected their deputies, who in turn elected you in Parliament with no pressure, no threats, no tricks and no maneuvers. There is nothing contrary to the Constitution or democracy. Those who rely on people and who win their hearts win; those who grapple with them and insult them lose. Those who adopt democracy, the supremacy of law, stability and welfare as their motto win; those who hold onto the status quo and their privileged statuses lose.

Mr. President, your kind and tolerant behavior toward those who have adopted a negative attitude against you by disrespecting the people’s will -- you should know -- reflects the kind of maturity expected of you and that befits you. This behavior of yours, which strengthens people’s democratic maturity proved on July 22, exposes those still looking to generate conflicts and crises before the public eye and debilitates and corners them.

Mr. President, some people are preparing a new plot to cause strife and dissension in the new term. Those seriously disturbed by the atmosphere of stability and peace are also disturbed by the harmony between you and Mr. Prime Minister. They have already started writing things like “Erdoğan will miss Sezer badly, Gül will make things difficult for him.” They don’t know you because it has been a long time since friendship and loyalty left their neighborhood. Mr. President, you should also know that the people who will painstakingly endeavor to set you at loggerheads with Mr. Prime Minister will not stop in the new term, either. As our nation is well aware of this, they are praying for you and for the future of our country. There are people who are even disturbed by people praying.

Mr. President, we believe that the state’s affection, compassion and tolerance will move to Çankaya Palace with you. We have long-unfulfilled desires. There may be family breakfasts and dinners held in Çankaya. For instance, the members of Parliament have breakfast in the presidential palace with all their kith and kin. And maybe you can invite the families of martyrs. And another time, you can share your table with orphans. A strong wave of love, sincerity and warmth radiating from the hills of Çankaya to our cities, districts, towns and villages… Your advisors may also come up with very good ideas.

Mr. President, please ignore those criticizing you, those who have adopted an attitude against you and those having difficulty accepting you. We believe that you will not fail those who trust you. We wish that history records your name and your services in golden letters. I present my most sincere love and respect.
