I also try to avoid electromagnetic waves, especially from cell phones. I feel very disturbed and I almost hate talking on the telephone already; it is very inconvenient and tough. Holding something to your ear for some time is definitely unnatural, although headphones are an option -- still, it is proven that wearing headphones leads to the spread of germs in your ears. We are exposed to electromagnetic waves even if we don’t feel it, directly in our offices, homes, shopping centers, outside and everywhere we spend our time. Cell phones, portable computers and other electronic devices are gradually becoming more important in our daily lives. This increases the amount of electromagnetic radiation to which we are exposed.
The effects of electromagnetic waves emitted from cell phones and base stations on the human body are not proven to cause specific health conditions, but they are obviously not healthy. Scientists have conducted research on laboratory animals on this matter, but there is still no proof that exposure to radiation is related to cancer. However, these waves are believed to have various effects on brain function and can cause headaches, insomnia and various psychological problems. It is impossible to keep electromagnetic waves out of our lives. The only thing to do is to be careful and get periodical medical checkups.
Thanks to our government, somebody is taking care of this. A communiqué in the Official Gazette regulating the use and implementation of devices that generate electromagnetic waves requires manufacturers to obtain a security certificate for systems that use electromagnetic waves over five watts and for all mobile devices, with no minimum wattage. Before receiving a security certificate, a test of electromagnetic levels should be conducted, according to the communiqué. These tests should be carried out by public institutions or private legal entities authorized by the corporation.
The tests should be carried out only by licensed staff. The requirements by which staff must qualify, and rules pertaining to the certificate, are listed in the Official Gazette communiqué.
The communiqué lists several requirements that must be met in order to qualify to receive a certificate. I am still fighting to remove the high frequency mobile station located at the top of the building next to my office. The mobile operator simply states that it has a rental agreement and having a cell phone tower is a must to provide better communication.
