Şemdinli 2010

We are now facing a scandal similar to the Şemdinli scandal in which several members of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) bombed a bookstore in the Şemdinli district of Hakkari province in 2005 in order to create chaos.
However, in that incident the assailants were caught red handed. As the police delve deeper into recent events, there is more and more evidence to show that there are members of the TSK, or people connected with the TSK, behind the provocations, intended to trigger a Turkish-Kurdish conflict, in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province. If you go over the news stories from the Sunday copies of newspapers known for their democratic stance, you can easily discern the “perfect coordination” of the attacks.

For instance, here is a news story from the Sunday issue of the Zaman daily: “The police discovered that the vehicle used in the attack that killed four police officers in the Dörtyol district of Hatay belongs to Bestami Kılıç -- a member of Payas Municipality’s city council from the Nationalist Movement Party [MHP] who claimed that he had been abducted by terrorists. The fact that Kılıç had met with three gendarmerie intelligence officers in civilian disguise shortly before he was kidnapped gives rise to suspicions over the deep state’s involvement in the attack. It is claimed that a gendarmerie commander who arrived at the scene of the crime after the attack prevented the prosecutor from examining the vehicle. This raises further suspicions. Terrorism experts maintain that the attack was not conducted by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party [PKK], but by a professional team. The main reason the perpetrators could not be apprehended is the hundreds of calls police received, deliberately providing false information about the assailants and how they fled. This effectively prevented the police from being able to pursue them. What happened in Dörtyol betrays traces of a well-planned provocation. Moreover, the incidents that occurred afterwards and the violent scuffles that took on the character of ethnic conflict give credence to suspicions that they did not occur spontaneously, but due to the manipulation of certain people.”

This is the news story about the incident from the Star daily: “It is reported that after the attack that killed four police officers in Dörtyol, the police blockaded the district and were able to track the terrorists in a short time. However, the assailants were saved by professional interference. After it was discovered that the vehicle used in the attack --which belongs to Bestami Kılıç, a member of the city council from the MHP -- was a Volkswagen Passat and carried three people, the police started to check all cars. However, a mysterious call made to the police hotline said that three assailants were fleeing in a Renault Broadway with the license plate number 63 ZN 134. Police officers worked diligently on locating the vehicle. However, when it was located and the road blockaded, the Broadway started driving in the opposite direction. This further raised suspicions. Additional teams were sent to the spot. The car was eventually stopped when the police opened fire. One of the people in the car was injured and the police examination revealed that they tried to escape because they did not have a license and were drunk. Then came the second move. In a short time, rumors were spread that the police had caught the assailants in a Broadway and that they were being kept at the police station. About 5,000 people rush to the station. Meanwhile, the Passat was identified by three police units. A chase ensued and after the vehicle had an accident, the drivers then ran away into a nearby wooded area. However, at that moment the police dispatcher announced: “5,000 people have surrounded the police station. They want to lynch the people inside,” and urged all teams to protect the station. All police units who were preparing to search the woods had to return, and the assailants fled.”

This is the news story from the Bugün daily: “Shocking information was obtained about the attack that killed four police officers in Dörtyol district of Hatay province. The police found that Bestami Kılıç, a member of the city council from the MHP and the owner of the vehicle used in the attack, is also an intelligence whistleblower for the gendarmerie. It was also discovered that Kılıç met with gendarmerie intelligence officers just before the attack. The intelligence report prepared by the Hatay Gendarmerie Regiment Command and sent to the 2nd Army Command contains shocking revelations. The report described the incident as follows: ‘One noncommissioned officer and two sergeants who work for the gendarmerie intelligence approached the mine near Kozludere that belongs to Bestami Kılıç in an ISUZU van with an unknown license plate. They met with Kılıç for about half an hour and then left the mine. At 14:30, shortly after the meeting, Kılıç left the mine in his gray Volkswagen Passat with the license plate number 06 AY 5785. Shortly after he left the mine, his car was stopped by five people -- three in civilian clothes and two in PKK uniforms. Kılıç’s mobile phone and car were confiscated by the terrorists. At 18:30, three terrorists in civilian disguise attacked the police checkpoint at the [Housing Development Administration of Turkey] TOKİ housing area and killed four police officers’.” The rest of the news story is similar to those in Zaman and Star newspapers.

The Taraf daily published a story titled “Sergeant acting as provocateur in Dörtyol.” The story read: “The counterterrorism teams identified the people who, after the violent attack in Dörtyol, provoked crowds by saying, ‘The PKK militants who killed the police officers are being kept at the police station. Let us go and take them,’ and detained Ahmet Büyük. Büyük told the police that he works for the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) and the 49th Infantry Brigade Command in Bingöl. However, Büyük was released after being handed over to the gendarmerie.”

This is from the Vakit daily: “It was reported that Dörtyol District Governor Hayri Sandıkçı had been promoted and appointed as Deputy Governor of Zonguldak, but, strangely, he did not want the promotion. Sandıkçı, who is said to have questionable ties, did not want to be appointed deputy governor, but returned to his former position by bringing his case to the Administrative Court.”

I think what we face now is more deplorable and scandalous than the Şemdinli scandal, which the military worked to cover up and in which prosecutor Ferhat Sarıkaya, who prepared the indictment on it, was removed from office hastily and contrary to established practice. Interestingly, it seems that we will once again see the involvement of military personnel and people connected to them in provocative acts.
