Citizenship by marriage: application and documentation (I)

“Hello Berk Çektir. I’m starting to apply for my Turkish citizenship and have read some of your information. But the one question I have is, where do you start? A little about me: I live in the İzmir area, have been married for 10 years to a Turkish man and moved to Turkey in May 2007 and have been here ever since. I’m now retired from a government job. My job in the government kept me from living here in Turkey. I have a residence permit and keep it up to date. Please let me know where to go first and get thing started. Sincerely yours.”

Application for the acquisition of Turkish citizenship

The application is submitted to the governor’s office of the province in which you reside. In your case, the application will be submitted to the İzmir Governor’s Office.

* Please note that the following documents are required for applications based on the acquisition of citizenship by marriage.

* First, you are supposed to fill out an application form (VAT-6) and submit a petition as explained by law. I highly recommend you get assistance from a professional when filling out the form but also during all the steps of the application process.

* A detailed registry documentation of the birth records of the applicant’s spouse is needed and can be obtained from the Birth Registry Office.

* A document proving the country of origin must be attached to the application. This may be an official translation of your passport into Turkish or any other document giving the same details. The translation of the document should be approved by a notary public.

* A document showing all the details of the identity must be attached to the form. This document should also be officially translated into Turkish and its translation approved by a notary public.

* A document showing the marriage was carried out by the authorities should be attached to the form. If the couple was married in Turkey, a Xerox copy of the marriage certificate is enough. Otherwise, documents obtained from foreign authorities must be officially translated into Turkish and the translation approved by a notary public.

* A Xerox copy of relevant pages of the residence permit (the pages with stamps) officially approved by a notary public should be attached to the VAT-6 form.

* If there is a court decision against the applicant based on criminal charges, a Xerox copy of this decision should be attached to the VAT-6 form and officially approved by a notary public. If the document is in a language other than Turkish, this document must be officially translated into Turkish and approved by a notary public.

* The list goes on and I will need to cut this article into two to provide you with a comprehensive list of documents. Part two of this article will be published next Monday.

* Finally, my daughter’s birthday is tomorrow. She will turn 4 years old now and loves the idea that I always wish her a happy birthday in my column. Happy birthday Elif!
