Although the dominant tendency around the world is to demand more democracy and more individual rights and freedoms, defending the reverse of these in Turkey and pretending to do this as if it is for the sake of modernism and against reactionaryism is really not easy. There is no other way to facilitate these attempts but through lies, cheating and conspiracies. However the truth, which manifests itself sooner or later, prevents these lies from persisting and make the anti-democratic powers' job even more difficult. There is probably no other thing that provides greater comfort than to be on the right side in regard to a controversial issue. It is possible to measure this from the reactions of some foreign journalists, academics, intellectuals and politicians. We have also been witnessing that the power stemming from being right have been fully impacting international media and publications. It is also possible to see reflections of these in the arguments voiced in a supplement on Turkey recently published by the Financial Times as well as in a report titled "The Rise of Political Islam in Turkey," prepared the RAND Corporation upon the request of the Pentagon.
We are also aware that the articles written about Turkey and those waging a democratic struggle are not always positive, just as we are aware that almost all of those articles negative in tone are written upon the orders of and manipulation by a segment in Turkey committed to reducing the democracy in the country to silence, a segment in cooperation with the neocons in the US. The arguments of this segment, which deems it too much for Turkey to have a multicolor, polyphonic parliament, a multi-party regime and secularism with universal qualities, are bound to remain fruitless in the long run. It is also obvious that this approach -- which gives the green light to the values in question to the extent that they secure the guardianship of the military, bureaucracy and the oligarchic bourgeoisie -- will not result in anything, even if it has resorted to telling lies at the cost of twisting all the recent development in Turkey.
Even though it is the anti-democratic powers in this country that suggest closer ties with Russia and Iran by leaving the Western alliance, they try to make it look as if it is the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and democratic circles in Turkey that want to do it. It is inevitable that they will be crushed under their defamation campaigns, which aim to influence people in the short run. It is impossible for us to think of those who have gotten their tall tales into "international circulation" by manipulating even some respectable publications such as the International Herald Tribune or The Wall Street Journal as separate from the midnight memorandum, the 367 decision of the Constitutional Court and all its other anti-democratic rulings, the republican rallies held with a certain number of people who were brought from one city to another by buses, the ongoing closure case started with an indictment full of ludicrous lies, or from the violent and illegal activities of the terrorist and crime network of Ergenekon.
Nobody should doubt that the losers in this process will be those who undermine the intelligence and foresight of the nation by thinking that they can easily manipulate an entire nation and the world with their preposterous lies, taking them all for fools.
The defense put up by the AK Party in the closure case will be recorded by history as proof of the "power of being right," whatever sort of ruling may be made by the Constitutional Court, which has repeatedly demonstrated that it is not fair and that it dispenses injustice.
Here, I will note only the conclusion section of the AK Party defense to give an example of the power of being right:
"We observe that all the information used against us by the Chief Prosecutor's Office has been interpreted against freedom, whereas the fundamental principle of the universal human rights law is to always make interpretations in favor of freedom. Let alone making interpretations in favor of freedom, the Chief Prosecutor's Office has conducted a sort of 'mind-reading' and launched into portraying nonexistent things as present or as things that will happen. In this case, there is not one single correct reason that would necessitate imposing any sanction on our party. Essentially, the AK Party has become a hub of serving the nation, democracy, peace and fraternity, loving tolerance and the love of Turkey, not a hub of illegal actions. The work of the AK Party during its six-year term has clearly demonstrated that it is the guarantor of the democratic, secular and social state of law."
Despite the reality that includes millions of pieces of evidence that would prove this paragraph right, a court that will close down the AK Party will be tried in the court of justice of history. The power of being right will eventually prevail over all the lies and injustices, despite court rulings.
