One disaster more instructive than 1,000 pieces of advice

The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has been frequently criticized over the past couple of years by European Union authorities who are friends of Turkey and also by liberal-democratic Turkish intellectuals for the serious slowdown in reform efforts.
But the AK Party has decided to turn a deaf ear to these criticisms for the most part. It forgot the fact that the strongest stanchion for political existence, despite the status quo supporter establishment in Turkey, which is enemy to anything different, was proceeding with the reforms at full speed; it neglected the reforms. Naturally, what was feared has come to pass and the anti-democratic interventions were quick to come, one after the other.

First they were confronted with the condition of 367, thereby rendering the party incapable of electing a president or discharging its legislative duty, and now they have been brought face-to-face with a closure case. Despite the April 27 e-memorandum issued by the military at midnight and the condition of 367 put forward by the Constitutional Court at the cost of committing a contravention of law, the AK Party arrived back in power by winning the elections again; it has however been unable to shake off its dead spirit ever since. It has wasted the last seven months, willingly or unwillingly. Apparently, the closure case has had a stimulating effect on the party and the number of signals indicating the AK Party will gravitate toward political and social reforms at the level and intensity demanded by the EU is increasing.

Our ancestors were tacitly and extremely right in saying, "One disaster is more instructive than a thousand pieces of advice." Let's now wait and see what sort of lessons the AK Party will extract from this latest disaster and what course it will steer in terms of more democracy, more freedom and more individual rights and how much effort it will exert.

I was actually going to set apart my column entirely for this issue. However, when I saw yesterday morning the fabulously humorous article by "Sivilay Abla," the astute female writer for the Taraf newspaper, a new shining star of the Turkish media, I decided that I definitely had to give it some space in my column today. Let's read this article together, as it sums up in the best manner possible the common features of the chief actors of the trouble Turkey has been going through recently.

State’s greenhouse will always be 21 degrees Celsius

My dear children, I spoke to myself this week. I asked myself and answered myself:

Question: Who issued the April 27 e-memorandum?

Answer: Those who receive a regular salary from the state; those who live in residences provided by the state; those who go to work in a car provided by the state and who go back home in the same car; those who spend time in the state's clubhouses; those who receive treatment at state hospitals; those who spend their annual leaves in the state's holiday villages; those who live under tight security provided by the state; and those whose lives are under the guaranty of the state thanks to their retirement pensions also to be provided by the state.

Question: Who accepted the 367 condition?

Answer: Those who receive a regular salary from the state; those who live in residences provided by the state; those who go to work in a car provided by the state and who go back home in the same car; those who spend time in the state's clubhouses; those who receive treatment at state hospitals; those who spend their annual leaves in the state's holiday villages; those who live under tight security provided by the state; and those whose lives are under the guaranty of the state thanks to their retirement pensions also to be provided by the state.

Question: Who opened a closure case against the AK Party?

Answer: Those who receive a regular salary from the state; those who live in residences provided by the state; those who go to work in a car provided by the state and who go back home in the same car; those who spend time in the state's clubhouses; those who receive treatment at state hospitals; those who spend their annual leaves in the state's holiday villages; those who live under tight security provided by the state; and those whose lives are under the guaranty of the state thanks to their retirement pensions also to be provided by the state.

Question: Who agreed to hear the closure case?

Answer: Those who receive a regular salary from the state; those who live in residences provided by the state; those who go to work in a car provided by the state and who go back home in the same car; those who spend time in the state's clubhouses; those who receive treatment at state hospitals; those who spend their annual leaves in the state's holiday villages; those who live under tight security provided by the state; and those whose lives are under the guaranty of the state thanks to their retirement pensions also to be provided by the state.

Question: With all these having been carried out, they have "lynched" law, mocked the people's will, the US dollar has increased against the Turkish lira, foreign capital has started running away, the EU road has come face-to-face with the risk of being completely and eternally blocked, our dignity in the world has been ruined, the democratization packages have been impeded, the solution to the Kurdish problem has been delayed until an unknown time. So who has been adversely affected by all of these?

Answer: Those who fear being made redundant whenever the economy stumbles; those who go home without a single dime in their pockets when they close their shops without having made a single sale; those who know that they will be kicked out when they cannot pay their rent; those who pay the installments for their children's private school in US dollars; those who pay half of their salary in taxes; those preparing to start a business with their savings; those counting the days to be reunited with their most fundamental individual rights; those living under the threat of terrorism; those who will feel humiliated in the face of the toppling of the party that they themselves had carried into power with their votes; rich and poor people, Muslims, socialists, leftists, liberals; the supporters of the AK Party, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the Democratic Society Party (DTP) and even the supporters of the Republican People's Party (CHP); women, men, children, youth, pensioners; peasants, urban dwellers, artists, artisans; shepherds, Aysun Kayacıs… Namely, all of us!

Let's not forget! Snow will always fall on our bare heads, drought will hit always us, the weeds will surround us always; however, the state's greenhouse will always be 21 Celsius degrees. The state's greenhouse will always be watered. The state's greenhouse will always be illuminated. The state's greenhouse will always be secure…
